History
North Shore Primitives, in Washington Court House, dwells in an old two-story building dating back to the 1840s. Originally it was known as the Fayette Supply Company and served the town as the location for necessaries, eventually being purchased by the CWZ & Penn Railroads and used as an intake station for the town’s goods. There are still wonderful features throughout the building denoting the age and original uses of the old building. Floors remain uneven where cargo was moved about on a track, the Y-beams are exposed throughout and the most treasured feature is the hand-drawn elevator that is still used to move furniture from floor to floor. Over the years, the building continued to be utilized as a storage and moving business.
The first cemetery in Washington Court House was laid out in 1810 and is located directly behind the North Shore Primitives & Antiques building. It was used for approximately forty-five years. Many of the pioneer citizens are buried there.
In 1993, new owners had the vision of a primitive shop. Doing some extensive work like adding plumbing to the property, their dream became a reality. The appropriately name Storage House was open for business. Ten years later the shop was purchased by another family who continued the primitive tradition as North Shore Primitives, naming it after an old section of town. In 2014, a new family purchased the building and continued with the name and selection of great primitives embracing the history of the building.
Today
In October, 2018 Jeb and Vanessa Blevins purchased the business continuing with the name North Shore Primitives adding & Antiques, LLC to the name. The new owners plan to make repairs and improvements to the building that are consistent with the history. The owners live in a historic house themselves that was built not long after the storage building.
The shop boasts a collection of handmade goods, notable reproductions in primitive, primitive country, shabby chic and farmhouse style and select antiques. The store is decorated with various rooms and areas depicting a specific room inside or outside the home. The store has a large selection of candles, rugs, kitchen towels, placemats other accessories, linens, lampshades and custom-made furniture. It truly is a destination to visit with over 7000 square feet of retail. It’s a must visit on your bucket list of shops.
